Vacuum instability and gravitational collapse
نویسنده
چکیده
We argue that (0, 1) heterotic string models with 4 non-heterotic spacetime dimensions may provide an instability of the vacuum to gravitational polarization in globally strong gravitational fields. This instability would be triggered during gravitational collapse by a nonlocal quantum switching process, and lead to the formation of regions of a high temperature broken symmetry phase which would be the equivalent in these string models of conventional black holes. Pre-big bang bubbles from the gravitational instability of generic string vacua
We formulate the basic postulate of pre-big bang cosmology as one of “asymptotic past triviality”, by which we mean that the initial state is a generic perturbative solution of the tree-level low-energy effective action. Such a past-trivial “string vacuum” is made of an arbitrary ensemble of incoming gravitational and dilatonic waves, and is generically prone to gravitational instability, leadi...
متن کاملGravitational Waves from Collapsing Vacuum Domains
The breaking of an approximate discrete symmetry, the final stages of a first order phase transition, or a postinflationary biased probability distribution for scalar fields are possible cosmological scenarios characterized by the presence of unstable domain wall networks. Combining analytical and numerical techniques, we show that the non-spherical collapse of these domains can be a powerful s...

Barrabès-Israel null shell formalism is used to study the gravitational collapse of a thin cylindrical null shell in vacuum. In general the lightlike matter shell whose history coincides with a null hypersurface is characterized by a surface energy density. In addition, a gravitational impulsive wave is present on this null hypersurface whose generators admit both the shear and expansion. In ...
متن کاملHow to bypass Birkhoff through extra dimensions A simple framework for investigating the gravitational collapse in vacuum
It is fair to say that our current mathematical understanding of the dynamics of gravitational collapse to a black hole is limited to the spherically symmetric situation and, in fact, even in this case much remains to be learned. The reason is that Einstein’s equations become tractable only if they are reduced to a 1 + 1 dimensional system of partial differential equations. Due to this technica...
متن کاملCritical behavior in vacuum gravitational collapse in 4 + 1 dimensions.
We show that the (4 + 1)-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations admit gravitational waves with radial symmetry. The dynamical degrees of freedom correspond to deformations of the three-sphere orthogonal to the (t,r) plane. Gravitational collapse of such waves is studied numerically and shown to exhibit discretely self-similar type II critical behavior at the threshold of black hole formation.
